English
Aims
At Prince Andrew School, we want to enthuse students with a love of reading and writing. Effective communication is the key to a successful life
and our English curriculum is designed to prepare students for life beyond the school. We cover the major areas of communication: speaking and listening, reading and writing. We want our students to learn to speak with clarity and confidence; to become critical readers who can discern deeper meanings and to be able to write competently for a variety of purposes and audiences.
KS3 (Year 7, 8 and 9)
At Prince Andrew School, we follow the UK National Curriculum for English. Over the course of three years, students will learn how to write for
different purposes and audiences, covering the writing triplets: persuade, argue, advise; inform, explain, describe; imagine, explore, entertain. They will be required to complete a reading and writing assessment for each unit as well as various speaking and listening activities throughout the year. We operate a system of continuous assessment so that we can accurately target and monitor your child’s performance, knowing when to intervene so that each student can reach their potential.
Year 7
Year 7 will complete four core units and study two readers. The core units aim to develop writing and reading skills. The readers are designed
to encourage a love of reading and exploring a writer’s craft. We choose the books to study carefully, aiming to engage students so that they want to read in their own time.
Year 8
Year 8 will complete three core units, including a media unit. They will also study the Shakespeare play, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ – this is a
requirement of the UK National Curriculum. Studying Shakespeare is vital in developing a student’s love of literature as well as understanding the staging of a play and the development of language. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has something for even the most reluctant student and has been a ‘hit’ with classes for many years. In addition Year 8 should study two readers over the course of the year.
Year 9
In Year 9 we try to extend our students and begin to prepare them for the skills necessary for their GCSEs. They will study two core units, a
spoken language unit and two readers. One reader should be a GCSE literature text so that they can extend their reading skills.
KS4 (Year 10 and 11)
At KS4 most students will study for IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature. This will give them an internationally recognised
qualification and continue to develop their competency in reading and writing. Students will study a variety of non-fiction texts and complete written coursework assignments of their own for English Language. In English Literature, they will analyse a range of texts, covering the major genres of poetry, drama and prose.
